How do you determine if a solar shading fabric is suitable for the needs of your building?
The EN14501 standard classifies fabrics according to various performance characteristics, including glare control. The classes range from 0 - limited effect to 4 - very good effect. So you would think that choosing a fabric with a high class is always a good idea, right? This is not the case. In fact, you might end up in a room that is too dark to be comfortable and need to turn on the lights when the sun is shining.

At Mermet we know that it is all about the balance: sufficient daylight but not too much, a comfortable temperature and a nice view to the outside. The type of fabric you need to achieve this depends on several factors:

• The type of building you are in
• Where your building is located and how much sunlight it receives
• The orientation of the façade: north, east, south, west? 
• The amount and type of glazing
• Where the furniture is located.

That is why Annex D of EN 14501 contains some tables to help you decide which glare control class you really need for your building situation.
